Arequipa - Peru Travel Guide
Arequipa: The With City
Situated at the foot of an ice-capped volcano El Misti, Arequipa is known for having one of the most beautiful settings and pleasant climates in Perú. When Pizarro “officially” founded the city in 1540, he was inspired to call it Villa Hermosa or Beautiful Town. Today it still is blessed with some of the finest colonial architecture in the country, with numerous churches and mansions, many of which are constructed from the white volcanic sillar that is cut from nearby mountains. In addition to the colonial architecture in this timeless city, the Arequipa region features a spectacular contryside including Colca Canyon, one of the deepest in the world.
